Riley Brown and Alana Greenwood Named Recipients of Johnny Romano and Ashlyn Shoemaker Grom of the Year Awards
Riley Brown received the Johnny Romano Grom of the Year award which goes to the male surfer who embodies the competitive spirit while never losing the stoke for surfing. Johnny loved to surf the TGSA events and was always stoked when he won and always stoked for his rivals when they won. Johnny passed away in 2008 from complications due to childhood Leukemia and his impact and presence is still being felt today.
Alana Greenwood received the Ashlyn Shoemaker Grom of the Year Award which goes to the female surfer who embodies the competitive spirit of surfing and never lose their smile no matter the result. Ashlyn was a beautiful soul who just loved being on the beach with her friends. Ashlyn passed away suddenly in 2005 from Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy. She is missed greatly by the Galveston community but her smile will be with us forever.
This award will be given out every year at the Galveston Open and if anyone would like to contribute to this award, we will have an account open to raise the bar for next year. We encourage everyone to check out these two outstanding foundations:
