After a long winter break, TGSA was pleased to see a window of surf open up that allowed the Galveston Open to run!
Saturday, our Texas surf family woke to some overcast skies, heavy winds and chilly weather, but the surf was in the waist to chest high range and there were some fun waves coming in amidst the churned up Gulf. Water temperatures were in the upper 50’s, compared to 49F at last years Galveston Open. A moderate current was running to the east, creating some challenging conditions for the surfers.
For day two of the contest the sun came out and the winds died down, allowing the waves to clean up for the Finals to run. Surf was in the waist to chest high range with, again, moderate current running to the east. Surfers and spectators alike enjoyed a beautiful day on the island.
Micah Steph took 1st place in the Men’s Open division, bringing home the money! Other highlights of the day included the Kryger siblings sweeping 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place in the Micro-groms division, Maddie Garlough and Aransas Blaha taking 1st and 2nd respectively in the Girls division, Ian Appling taking 1st in Boys, Leah Murray 1st in Women’s and Kris Hopkins bringing home 1st place in the Mens division.
Scott Elwood of G Scott Imaging was out with his Eagle Eye to catch a different perspective of a TGSA contest, and he did indeed. Thanks so much G Scott for again for always being there and capturing the moments!
Special thanks go out to Underground Surf Depot for once again sponsoring the Galveston Open. Everyone enjoyed the pizza and awards at the shop!
