Mothers Day weekend brought some heavy southeast winds which gave the island some ample surf to call the Port Aransas Open on!
Surf was in the chest to head high range with some chop, creating very challenging conditions. With heavy winds in the 20-35mph range, the sun came out and gave us two beautiful days for our TGSA family to enjoy.
Thankfully the current was minimal for most of the weekend creating an excellent day for some of our up and coming young groms to show us that the future of TGSA surfing is in good hands.
Highlights include the Micro-groms who battled through some tough conditions, with Isabelle, Connor and Chase Kryger, and Grace Cunningham making it to the finals!! Connor, Isabelle and Chase Kryger took 1st, 2nd and 3rd respectively and Grace took 4th!
The Menehune Girls division really turned a corner this weekend with both days of heats showing that they are advancing rapidly in their skills. Saturday kicked off with Mia Marr paddling out to the outside catching some overhead waves in the quarter and semi-finals . Sundays finals proved to be a true, exciting nail biter, with all 4 finalists, Mia Marr, Isabelle Kryger, Carly Hudson and Ireland Lang, paddling out into the big surf on the outside, charging!! Isabelle Kryger took 1st overall, Carly Hudson 2nd, Mia Marr 3rd and Ireland Lang 4th.
Way to take it up a notch Menehune Girls!
The Menehune boys also were tearing up the waves both days of the event with Hunter Martinez shooting the pier twice. Dallas Cunningham took 1st, Nick Bertanga 2nd, Connor Kryger 3rd, and Hunter Martinez 4th.
Other highlights of the day included the young women showing some power! Maddie Garlow swept first in both Girls, Jr. Women and Women! Aransas Blaha got second in both Girls and JR. Women and 3rd in Women. Both All Star girls showed some impressive strength in their maneuvers!
The young men were also putting on quite a show, with Bradley Blades taking 1st in both Boys and Jr. Men and Ian Appling taking 2nd in Boys.
In the Mens division, Ryan Cobb took 1st. Tripp Howse won Masters, Morgan Faulkner took home 1st in Air, and Nathan Floyd captured 1st in both Open Shortboard and Longboard divisions!
Team awards were Dockside White taking home the win, Wind and Wave A 2nd, and Boardhouse A and B taking home 3rd and 4th respectively.
TGSA is looking forward to the State Championships and the showdown looming between teams Dockside White and Wind and Wave A for the team title, as both teams are currently tied in first place!
To sum up this awesome weekend for everyone, in the words of G Scott: “This is literally the LAST shot I took this weekend, and it sums up EVERYTHING. That exhausted, sunburnt, eyes-closed smile….”
We all agree!
TGSA would like to thank Boardhouse Surf And Skate, Fins Grill and Icehouse and Port Aransas Chamber of Commerce for their sponsorship and support! Also a big shout out to G Scott for all the amazing images he captures and hard work!!
