The Galveston Open Presented by Southern Spears Surf Shop was held on Saturday, February 24, 2018 at the 51st Street Jetty along the Galveston Seawall. The competition directors and district surfer’s rep made the call and TGSA competitors were rewarded with highly contestable surf in the waist high range with moderate SE winds before conditions cleaned up and improved for the finals. The east side of the jetty offered longer, workable rights while the west side delivered fast, punchy lefts. The surf showed up and the fierce competition did not disappoint.
After the Packery Channel and now the Galveston Open, a changing of the guard seems to be taking place or is it only a wake up call for our seasoned veterans in TGSA’s 30th Anniversary Season? US Junior Olympic Team member and Dockside rider Ian Appling is leading the charge, taking first place in Men’s Division and the Junior Men’s at the Packery and Galveston Opens. Ian’s fellow Junior competitor and Dockside teammate Bradley Blades took 3rd in the Men’s at Packery and 2nd this weekend in Galveston. The remaining contests of the year should prove to be competitive and fiery as the veterans battle to hold their spots at the top of the Men’s division, or is it the changing of the guard!
Speaking of the old guard, Galveston native Kris “KHop” Hopkins also had a big weekend taking home the top cash awards in the Open Shortboard and Open Longboard divisions. Kris had his top game on when the checks were at hand and Wind & Wave veteran Nathan Floyd was on his heals finishing 2nd in both divisions. KHop and Nathan also took first place finishes respectively in the Masters and Men’s Longboard divisions as well.
In the Women’s and youth girls divisions, Isabelle Kryger showed up with her broom this weekend, sweeping the Menehune Girls, Girls, Junior Women and Women’s divisions with 1st Place finishes in all four divisions. The Kryger trio of dad Matt, Isabelle and her brother Connor had a big weekend. Keep your eyes on this up and coming brother and sister combo along with dad as they continue to post impressive results in each contest.
The Galveston Open had a large turnout in the Micro Grom division. Twelve boys and girls competed in the Micro Grom division, making it our largest entry for this division this year. Evelyn McDevitt led the way with a first place finish and was followed by Preston Crowell, Kai Luper, and Archer McDonald. Other top division winners include: Connor Kryger – Menehune Boys; Arthur Pecore – Boys; Bronson Hilliard – Senior Men; Frank Floyd – Legends; Ian Appling – Junior Longboard; Brett Hopkins – Senior Longboard; Andrew Brooks – Air; and Matt Kryger – Open SUP. Carried by all their team members making the finals, Wind and Wave B took first place team award with 78 points followed by Dockside Red with 77, Southern Spears A with 68 and BoardHouse A with 50. With contestable surf and comfortable conditions, all of the TGSA competitors and families had a great weekend on the Galveston Seawall Another big shout out to Southern Spears Surf Shop for being our Galveston Open Presenting Sponsor. We would also like to say thank you to Dockside Surf Shop, Benjamin’s Surf Shop, Boardhouse Surf and Skate and John Steele for providing giveaways for our young competitors at this event. Special thanks to our TGSA judges and ground crew for putting on another clean event and last but not least the TGSA Family. The 2017/2018 TGSA Season is the organization’s 30th Season of competition and it would not be possible without the continuing commitment of the Texas Surf Famly. TGSA is Ohana Strong!
