The Matagorda Open, Presented by Poco Playa Restaurant, was held at Matagorda Beach on April 21st. Contestants were greeted with surf that was thigh to waist high to start the day and gradually increased all day with the onshore flow creating some very contestable conditions for the surfers. It was bumpy all day, but waves walled up creating some scoring potential for those in position.
Boy’s Division standout Phi Pecore surprised everyone and took down some of Texas finest surfers by winning the Open Shortboard Division. Using his size and ability to adjust to the conditions, Phi fought through the quarter and semifinal rounds to put himself in position to pull off the upset, and he came through to the loud roar of those in attendance. The Kryger pair, Isabelle and Connor, continued their season domination taking five 1st place and two 2nd place finishes. Connor took first in Menehune Boys and Boys and second in Junior Men, while sister Isabelle took first in Menehune Girls, Girls and Women and second Junior Women. US Junior Olympic Team Members Ian Appling and Maddie Garlough had strong showings as well with Ian taking first in Junior Men and Men and also making the finals in Men Longboard, and Open Shortboard and Longboard. Maddie finished up with wins in Junior Women and Women Longboard, and had a second place finish in Women. Other top finishers included: Reef Polderman – Micro Grom; Kris Hopkins – Masters; John Johnson – Senior Men and Legends; Robert Murphy – Junior Longboard; Nathan Floyd – Men Longboard; Gaines Burns – Senior Men Longboard; Kristen Darden – Senior Women; Stefan Lewis – Air; Morgan Faulkner – Open Longboard.
Dockside’s Red Team continued their domination as well by taking the Team title at Matagorda. BoardHouse A & B took third and fourth respectively, and Southern Spears A rounded out the top four with a fourth place finish. Dockside Red has a strong hold on the Team of the Year Points standings, but a slip and a strong showing by Southern Spears A could make things interesting at the 2018 Texas State Championships to be held at Bob Hall Pier.
Thanks once again to Poco Playa and all their staff for hosting TGSA. When in Matagorda, we encourage all of our members and friends to visit Poco Playa for great food and drinks. See everyone at Texas State Surfing Championships.
