The Port Aransas Open Presented by to Irie’s Island Food, Port Aransas Chamber of Commerce, and Third Coast Beach Co was held on the first call, March 24th and 25th.  Port Aransas greeted surfers with solid waist to chest high waves that continued filling in throughout the weekend. With strong onshore winds, conditions were a bit mixed up and bumpy, but the surf had power on the outside section with surfers taking off near the T-head and also offered great reform opportunities through the inside.

Horace Caldwell Pier was empty this event due to damages from Hurricane Harvey

Caldwell Pier was the site of the Port Aransas Open once again.  Damages to the pier from Hurricane Harvey kept the judges, photographers, and observers off the pier, but everyone pulled together and made necessary adjustments to make the event a great weekend for TGSA and the Port Aransas Community.

Phi Pecore had a strong outing at his home break

Shane Wiggins stepped up to take the Men’s division back from the young guns by taking first place, but Ian Appling did find his niche in the Men’s Longboard and come out on top for the first time this year.   Maddie Garlough returned and surfed her first TGSA event for the 2017/2018 season and notched wins in both the Junior Women and Women’s Division.  Maddie is also a member of the US Junior Olympic Surf Team and continues to travel back and forth to California for training and contest.   Port Aransas natives and brothers Phi and Arthur Pecore had a good event with Phi taking 1st in the Boys and 3rd in the Junior Men, while brother Arthur took home 2nd in the Boys and 4th in the Junior Men.   These two are making a mark in the TGSA events and are on the radar to be watched as TGSA heads to its final event in Matagorda before the Texas State Surfing Championships in May.   Kris Hopkins had another big event in the money rounds sweeping both the Open Shortboard and Open Longboard taking home all the cash once again.

KHop was money when the money was on the line

Other top finishers included: Reef Polderman – Micro Grom; Connor Kryger – Menehune Boys; Isabelle Kryger – Menehune Girls and Girls; Ian Appling – Junior Men and Air; Kris Hopkins – Masters; John Johnson – Senior Men; Jody Marr – Senior Women; Brett Hopkins – Legends; Andrew Leal – Junior Longboard; Kalani Balcom – Women Longboard; Frank Floyd – Senior Longboard; and Matt Kryger – Open SUP.   In the Team Division, Dockside Red took a commanding lead in the chase for the Season Points Championship by finishing 1st, followed by BoardHouse A & B in 2nd and 3rd Place and Southern Spears A in 4th Place.   Please visit the Results tab for the complete Port Aransas Open Results.   The updated Season Standings are also now posted.

With contestable surf and comfortable conditions, all of the TGSA competitors and families had a great weekend in Port Aransas.   Another big shout out to Irie’s Island Food, Port Aransas Chamber of Commerce, and Third Coast Beach Co. sponsoring the Port Aransas Open.  Special thanks to our TGSA judges and ground crew for putting on another clean event and last but not least the TGSA Family.   The 2017/2018 TGSA Season is the organization’s 30th Season of competition and it would not be possible without the continuing commitment of the Texas Surf Famly.   TGSA is Ohana Strong!
