The TGSA kicked off its 2019-2020 season in August with its annual Grom Round-Ups presented by Texas Surf Camps in Galveston and Port Aransas.  There was a great turn-out in both locations, and we hope to see the participants join us for the regular competition season. Thanks to Texas Surf Camps for two great events.

On August 18th we wrapped up last season with the Texas State Surfing Championships presented by Taylor Recovery Center at Bob Hall Pier in Corpus Christi.  Congratulations to all of the winning competitors and especially to Frank Floyd, the winner of the prestigious Spirit of Surfing award and to the Southern Spears Surf Shop Team for winning season points and taking the Wes Ellsworth Bell back to Galveston.  Complete results will be posted on the TGSA website soon. Special thanks to Taylor Recovery Center for sponsorship of the TSSC and to all of the sponsors of the TGSA throughout the season.

We have some changes to announce for this season.  First, we say goodbye to Rob Henson as President, who resigned following the Texas State Surfing Championships due to the demands of his new job at BSR Surf Resort.  Big thanks to Rob for his work on behalf of the TGSA. We look forward to seeing him up at BSR and wish him success in his new venture. Earlier last season we also said goodbye to South Competition Director Kevin Hudson as he and his daughters moved to California, where we have been seeing young Carly Hudson tearing up some West Coast waves.  We thank Kevin for his work on behalf of the TGSA and wish him and family well in their new home.

The Board of Directors for the 2019-2020 season are as follows:

The next Board election will be held at the 2020 Texas State Surfing Championships.  All members are encouraged to share their thoughts about the TGSA with members of the Board of Directors, and especially with your surfer reps Kris and Morgan regarding competition matters.

The Board has established the competition season for 2019-2020 with our first Open event being the Galveston Open presented by returning sponsor Southern Spears Surf Shop, with first call September 7-8.  We will be giving each Open event four weeks to run this year before moving on to the next event on the schedule. We have also scheduled Open events in Port Aransas and Matagorda and the Texas State Surfing Championships, and are working on other innovative event ideas for the season.  Stay tuned for updates!

Special thanks to Taylor Recovery Center, another returning TGSA sponsor, who is a Season Sponsor this year and is providing great new competition jerseys for the TGSA in addition to other support.

We have implemented a new on-line registration system this season and urge everyone to utilize it.  This system does not charge any service fee to members and allows for full refunds.  We will honor previous roll-overs of entries, but will no longer be rolling over entries from one contest to the next.  If you do not surf in an event you have paid for, you will receive a complete refund after the close of the event and will need to register and pay again for any future events.  We will also continue to accept mail-in entries and entries delivered to a Board member. Please note that in order to guarantee a spot you must register and pay the entry fee (as well as membership) by midnight on the Wednesday before the contest.  The new link is and will be posted on our website and contest announcement posts.  We will accept entries already received through the old on-line system for the Galveston Open only.  Our entry form and release are being updated and will be posted on the TGSA website for mail-in entries.

We are implementing a few changes in our competitive divisions this year.  We will be introducing a new Menehune Longboard division open to males and females ages 12 and under.  Junior Longboard will be revised to include males and females ages 13-17.  This change is designed to reduce the large age range for the former Junior Longboard division, which included ages 0-17.  (Ages for all TGSA divisions are as of January 1, 2020.) Surfing up from Menehune Longboard to Junior Longboard will be allowed.

The Air division will now be an open event with cash prizes only and is open to males and females of all ages.  The division will be judged on the basis of COMPLETED airs only, defined as landing and surfing out of an air maneuver.  Attempts will not count for either advancement or prizes. Places 2nd through 4th will receive a return of the entry fee only if an air is completed in the final.  1st will win the pot. If no air is completed in the final, no prizes will be awarded.  Entry fees not awarded as prizes will roll over to the next event. Let’s see some AIR!

We have also added a new division this season called Grand Legends.  It is a short board division for males and females ages 60 and over.  There is no restriction on board length for this division, although it will be judged as a short board heat.

The division formerly named Senior Women has been renamed Women Masters for ages 30+.  There is no longer a division called Senior Women, but, as before, women are eligible to surf up in Senior Men (40+) and Legends (50+), and now Grand Legends (60+).

We are also introducing innovations to the All Star Team format and, as announced at State, are now accepting applications for the Team from TGSA competitors of ALL AGES/ALL DIVISIONS.  The Team will be chosen from members who express interest.  Rankings will be considered, but desire and commitment will be equally important in selecting this year’s team.  Morgan Faulkner will serve as the Team Coach. If you are interested in becoming a member of the All Star Team please submit a short essay telling us about yourself and why you believe you are qualified to represent the TGSA as an All Star Team member.  More information on the new Team format is coming, so stay tuned! Submit essay applications by email to on or before September 6, 2019.  The new All Star Team will be announced at the Galveston Open.

Another change this season will be the provision of a special TGSA gift to each person signing up for membership.  This will replace t-shirts at each contest, with the exception of State, where we will provide a contest t-shirt including all sponsors during the season.  We will be selling our inventory of vintage TGSA contest t-shirts at the Galveston Open for $5—a chance to pick up some cool tees for a great price. The new TGSA membership gift will be available at the Galveston Open and we think you are going to like it!

On behalf of myself and the Board of Directors we welcome you to an exciting new season of the TGSA.  See you on the beach!
